Accessibility statement
How this site was tested, with the results.
This site aims to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. It is a concept project and the rescue is fictional, but the tests below were run on this site.
Test results, October 28, 2026
| Check | Result |
|---|---|
| axe-core (WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 A and AA, plus best practices) | 0 violations on 10 pages, at phone and desktop sizes |
| axe-core on the tool in use: sign-up form open, form with errors, after signing up, coordinator view, and the reset and add-shift error states | 0 violations on the tool in use: sign-up form open, form with errors, after signing up, coordinator view, and the reset and add-shift error states, at phone and desktop sizes |
| Lighthouse accessibility (4 pages: home, volunteer, adopt, impact, phone profile) | 100 on every page tested |
| Lighthouse performance | 100 on every page tested |
| Lighthouse best practices | 100 on every page tested |
| Keyboard | Skip link is the first stop and every stop shows a visible focus ring, including the date field |
| Reflow at 320 and 640 pixels wide | No horizontal scrolling |
| Text spacing | No clipped text |
| Page weight | About 120 KB or less for most pages. The volunteer page is about 400 KB because each shift shows a photo |
| Structure | One h1 per page, no skipped heading levels, every page has a title and description, every image has an alt attribute (empty for decoration) |
The volunteer tool
- Every field has a visible label and the correct autocomplete hint.
- If a sign-up form has a mistake, a message appears next to the field and keyboard focus moves to the first problem.
- After you sign up or cancel, the result is announced to screen readers and focus stays where you can keep working.
- Shifts that are full say "Full" in text, not only in color. The spots-open count uses text, not a bar.
- Resetting the demo data takes two steps, so it cannot happen by accident.
- On narrow screens the coordinator table stacks into labelled rows.
Everything is stored only in your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
Charts
The impact chart is a plain list with the year and the number written out, so the bars add to the text and are not the only way to read the figures.
Images
Photos that add meaning, such as the animal portraits, have alternative text. Purely decorative ones, such as the shift photos, have none so screen readers skip them. Images are served in modern formats at several sizes. The photos on this site are computer-generated for the concept. They are not real people, animals or places.
What was fixed during testing
- The coordinator table scrolled sideways on a 320 pixel screen. It now stacks.
- The date field's focus ring was not detected. It now has an explicit one.
- The sign-up confirmation ended with a doubled period. It no longer does.
- After the October 28 redesign, links in the tinted areas and the Cancel sign-up buttons were too faint. They are now darker.
- The volunteer shift grid was a little too wide for a 320 pixel screen. It now fits.
Not yet tested
- Manual screen reader testing (VoiceOver, NVDA), including the announcements after sign-up and cancel. This statement will be updated when it is done.
- Lighthouse "SEO" shows 60, not 100, because the site is deliberately marked
noindexso search engines skip this concept project.
Tools: axe-core, Lighthouse 12, and Nest Co.'s own scripted checks.
